Overview
The Benedictine abbey of Metten, founded in 766 near the Danube, rebuilt its library hall in exuberant rococo style in the eighteenth century. Illusionistic ceiling paintings and carved figures celebrate a scholarly tradition more than a thousand years old. Around 150,000 volumes include medieval manuscripts from the founding centuries.
