Overview
In the seventeenth century Duke August the Younger made Wolfenbuttel the largest library north of the Alps, cataloging some 135,000 titles with novel systems. The Gospels of Henry the Lion, a masterpiece of 1188, returned in 1983 for over 32 million marks, among the highest prices ever paid for a book. Today it is a center for medieval and early modern study.
