Overview
The library of the Benedictine abbey founded in 747 preserves 2,100 medieval manuscripts, including the Plan of Saint Gall, the only surviving large architectural drawing from the early Middle Ages. The rococo hall completed in 1767 by Peter Thumb is considered one of the finest library interiors ever built. UNESCO inscribed the abbey district as a World Heritage Site in 1983.
