Founded on the bequest of Chicago merchant Walter L. Newberry, this independent research library opened in 1887 for the study of the humanities. Its free reading rooms serve scholars of the Americas and Europe, drawing on 1.5 million books and 5 million manuscript pages, with particular strength in maps, Native American history, and the Renaissance.
