Overview
Forty three Portuguese immigrants founded this reading society in 1837 to keep their literature alive in Brazil. The neo Gothic limestone interior, carved in Lisbon and shipped across the Atlantic, rises in galleries to a stained glass lantern roof. Some 350,000 volumes make it the largest collection of Portuguese literature outside Portugal.
