Overview
Benjamin Franklin and fifty members of his Junto club founded this subscription library in 1731, pooling funds to buy books for shared use. It became a model for civic libraries across the colonies. Today it survives as an independent research library with over half a million rare books, specializing in Americana from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries.
