Overview
One of the oldest independent libraries in the United States, the Athenaeum was founded in 1807 by a group of Boston intellectuals to advance learning. Its 1849 landmark on Beacon Street houses art galleries, and the fifth floor reading room looks out over the Granary Burying Ground. Portions of George Washingtons personal library are held in its vaults.
