Overview
The largest library in Latin America, the Biblioteca Nacional traces to the Portuguese royal library brought to Rio de Janeiro by the court fleeing Napoleon, opening to the public in 1814. Around 9 million items include photographs of the Brazilian empire, rare colonial imprints, and the manuscripts of Machado de Assis, who worked there as a young man.
