Overview
Founded in 1873, two years after the Great Fire destroyed the citys book stocks, the Chicago Public Library grew out of donations of books sent by cities around the world. The Harold Washington Library Center of 1991, crowned with giant owl sculptures, is one of the largest public library buildings in the world, and the system of more than 80 locations holds about 11 million items.
