Created in 1895 from the Astor and Lenox libraries and the Tilden trust, NYPL runs 92 locations serving millions of New Yorkers. The 1911 Schwarzman flagship on Fifth Avenue guards the marble lions Patience and Fortitude and the 297 foot Rose Main Reading Room. Total holdings exceed 55 million items, making it one of the largest public library systems in the world, free to all since opening day.
