Overview
The first large free municipal library in the United States, founded by an 1848 act of the state legislature and opened in 1854, the Boston Public Library pioneered branches and childrens rooms. Bates Hall, the Renaissance revival reading room of the 1895 McKim building, spans the length of a city block. Holdings of nearly 24 million items include medieval manuscripts and the personal library of John Adams.
