Overview
Founded in 777 by Duke Tassilo of Bavaria, the Benedictine abbey of Kremsmunster preserves about 180,000 volumes in baroque halls. Its Mathematical Tower observatory, begun in 1749, has watched the skies for centuries, making the abbey a landmark of early science as well as faith. The monastery school continues today.
