Overview
The Austrian National Library grew from the Habsburg court library, whose earliest recorded acquisition, an illuminated gospel book, dates to 1368. The baroque Prunksaal state hall of 1726, designed by Fischer von Erlach, lines nearly 80 meters with marble and about 200,000 historic volumes. Total holdings approach 12 million items, and its papyrus collection of some 180,000 pieces is the largest in the world.
