Enriqueta Rylands founded this neo Gothic palace of books in memory of her husband, opening it to the people of Manchester on New Years Day 1900. Part of the University of Manchester since 1972, it holds over a million books and manuscripts, including the St John fragment, the earliest known fragment of the New Testament, written around 125.
