Overview
Founded at the University of Texas at Austin in 1957, the Harry Ransom Center grew into one of the great literary and cultural archives by buying the papers of living and recently dead writers. It owns a complete Gutenberg Bible and the earliest surviving camera photograph, Nicephore Niepces View from the Window at Le Gras of about 1826. Archives of Samuel Beckett, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and David Foster Wallace sit beside the Watergate papers of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein.
