Overview
Chartered in 1891 and funded by a bequest from George S. Pepper, the Free Library opened its Beaux-Arts Parkway Central building on Logan Square in 1927. Designed by the office of Horace Trumbauer with Julian Abele, the facade echoes the twin palaces on the Place de la Concorde in Paris. Its Rare Book Department holds cuneiform tablets, medieval manuscripts, and a Charles Dickens collection that includes Grip, the stuffed pet raven that inspired Edgar Allan Poe.
