Overview
Founded in 1812 by printer and patriot Isaiah Thomas, the American Antiquarian Society is the oldest historical society in the United States with a national rather than local focus. Its research library in Worcester, Massachusetts, collects everything printed in America through 1876 and holds a large share of all the books, pamphlets, and broadsides known to have been printed in the colonies and early republic. Its collection of early American newspapers is among the largest anywhere.
