Overview
The library of the oldest university in Sweden was founded in 1620 when King Gustavus Adolphus donated the book collections of the Vasa kings. Much of its early growth came from war booty seized during the Thirty Years War, including the Codex Argenteus, the sixth century Silver Bible written in Gothic, now displayed in the Carolina Rediviva building that opened in 1841. It also holds an original Carta Marina of Olaus Magnus and is one of the legal deposit libraries of Sweden.
