Overview
Founded in 1928, the National Library of Poland inherited the ambition of the Zaluski Library, one of the first public libraries in Europe, opened in Warsaw in 1747 and carried off to St Petersburg after the partitions. During World War II German forces deliberately burned much of its special collections after the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. Today it gathers legal deposit copies of Polish publications in a modern complex beside Pole Mokotowskie park, guards treasures such as the Florian Psalter, and runs the Polona digital library.
