Overview
The largest library in India by volume traces back to the Calcutta Public Library of 1836 and the Imperial Library formed in 1903 under Lord Curzon. Renamed the National Library after independence, it opened to the public in 1953 at Belvedere House, the former residence of the Lieutenant Governors of Bengal, set in a 30 acre estate in Kolkata. It collects publications in all the major Indian languages and serves as a legal deposit library for the country.
