Overview
The largest library in Asia, founded in 1909 and opened in 1912, the National Library of China holds over 41 million items. Special collections include oracle bones from the Shang dynasty, the largest such gathering anywhere, Dunhuang manuscripts recovered from desert caves, and surviving volumes of the Yongle Encyclopedia of 1408. The modern north building of 2008 frames a contemporary reading room around a classical courtyard.
