Overview
Founded with the university in 1575 in the Dutch revolt against Spain, Leiden owns one of the oldest university library collections in Europe. The bequest of Josephus Scaliger seeded world famous oriental and classical manuscripts, and the library pioneered modern cataloging in the nineteenth century. Millions of volumes now serve one of Europes oldest universities.
