Overview
Founded in 1877 by act of Parliament and opened in 1890 in its Kildare Street building, the National Library of Ireland holds more than 10 million items documenting Irish life. Its literary archives are world famous, including the working papers of W. B. Yeats and James Joyce manuscripts such as the Ulysses copybooks, alongside photographic collections gathered over two centuries.
