Overview
Formed in 2004 by merging the National Library of Canada with the National Archives, whose roots go back to the Dominion Archives of 1872, Library and Archives Canada preserves the memory of the state and its people. It holds over 20 million books and periodicals plus hundreds of kilometers of textual records, including census returns, immigration files, and military service records vital to family historians.
