Overview
Founded on the bequest of scholar Antonio Magliabechi and opened to the public in 1747, the Florence national library became one of the two central national libraries of Italy in 1885. The 1966 Arno flood submerged its basements, damaging millions of books and pioneering modern mass conservation techniques. It holds about 10 million volumes, rich in Dante and Renaissance imprints.
